On Friday I made the trip up to town for the Allergy and Free From Show at London Olympia and I am open in saying that I was excited. When you are told ‘you can’t eat that’ on a relatively regular basis it is so exciting to be under one roof where you can, quite simply, gorge yourself! Basically, I was like a small child in a sweet shop and I don’t think I was the only coeliac to feel this way. I will be writing more in-depth reviews about the individual companies in due course but thought I would initially do a brief overview of the show.

The day started off well! Perkier Foods were running a competition each day of the show to win goody bags and by quoting the winning phrase I managed to nab myself some goodies! I also got to meet Ann and Steve who were lovely. Do click on the link to learn more about their company.

Udi’s were the sponsors of the show and they really have gone from strength to strength since they launched from the US in the UK in 2013.  I managed to nab a tiger loaf for a £1 – bargain! Why didn’t I buy more?! Coeliac fail!

All of the big boys were there including Genius and Newburn Bakehouse but it was also lovely to meet the smaller newer companies who are making their mark on the gluten free world. If you attended the show and did not sample a Welsh Cake from Bakestone Bakery then shame on you! They are the bomb! Ok, I might be accused of being slightly biased as Rhys (the founder and the cheeky smiler above) is a good friend of mine and the company is based in my home town in South Wales but I would never bleat (sheep…wales…no pun intended hehe) on about a product that I didn’t love. I missed Welsh Cakes after I was diagnosed so when Bakestone Bakery started up I was all over it. Read my previous blog here. You can now order their Welsh Cakes online so what are you waiting for!?

I love Celia lager especially with a pizza and I had a lovely chat to Nicos who informed me that they have a 100% gluten free cafe/restaurant in Brixton which runs in partnership with Celia called Vozars – I will definitely be dragging my fella along to check this out!

I also got to meet Paul from Kabuto Noodles was was lovely to chat to. I got to sample some of their lovely noodles not so long ago and I highly recommend!

I am currently obsessed with the Trek coca oat protein flapjack and only discovered at the show that they are part of the Nakd group – bit slow on the uptake there!

By the time I arrived home I was pooped and had tired arms; above is what happened shortly after getting through the door (this was, at one stage, a Genius lemon cupcake!).

Although it was great to chat and meet all of the various companies I also got to meet some fellow gluten free bloggers who were lovely and you definitely start to feel a lot less like an alien species when you see the community that exists, do check out their blogs:

Everybody was so lovely to take the time to chat that it would be impossible to name everybody but I did want to say thank yous to Ruby at Heck sausages for giving me some sausages to try (on the BBQ as I type!) and Freya at BFree for the fajita kit (on the menu for Tuesday night!).

Some other companies where I got to sample their wares and would recommend are:

Georgia’s Choice
Estrella Damm

Looking forward to working my way through the goodies!

Claire x
